Shawn has always been interested in and fascinated by movement. His first true exposure was as a competitive gymnast. Competing for seven years through the elite level, this was his primary sport and took up almost all of his time as a teenager. This led him to coaching gymnastics for an additional five years. During this time his interest in how we move the body grew. Entering into his college career, his intent was to continue through into physical therapy. He began this path at the University of Oregon, receiving his Bachelors Degree in Exercise and Movement Science in 1994. He continued on to receive my Masters Degree in Sports Medicine in 1996. His professional career began working in a variety of environments in the traditional fitness industry, with responsibilities from personal training to fitness management. During this time, he was exposed to what I feel is a gap between the medical and rehabilitation industry, and the fitness industry and general public. He wanted to fill this gap.
Driven by his fascination with neuromuscular function and rehabilitation, as well as the need to transition people from medicine and rehabilitation to full function, he founded the Carpe Diem Pilates and Personal Training Center with his wife, Hayley in 1998. Carpe Diem is a "rehabilitation to fitness" based facility that caters not only to individuals dealing with diseases and disabilities, but also general health and fitness issues. Carpe Diem is a host site for both Polestar Pilates Education, an international Pilates education and certification company, as well as Balanced Body University and their CoreAlign Training program. Shawn is also a principal educator for Polestar Pilates Education, conducting Pilates education courses throughout the Western United States, a Master Trainer for Balanced Body University and the CoreAlign training system, and on the Board of Directors of the Pilates Method Alliance.
