Pilates Method Alliance

Pilates is a method of exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strengthen and balance the body. The Pilates method has been in continual use since its creator, Joseph Pilates, immigrated to New York City from Germany in 1926. As the method has gained popularity in the United States and around the world, it became necessary to establish professional standards for the practice and teaching of the Pilates method.

The Pilates Method Alliance is an international non-profit professional association dedicated to establishing certification and continuing education standards for those practicing the Pilates method. In 2005, the PMA launched the first industry-wide Pilates method certification exam in the United States. Carpe Diem co-owner Shawn Healey is on the PMA Board of Directors.

PMA firmly believes that Pilates offers a variety of different benefits to those who practice it. Those benefits include increased lung capacity and circulation and improved abdomen strength and flexibility. Pilates can improve posture, balance and core strength. Pilates also improves bone density and joint health and contributes to enhanced balance and body control.
